Whale hunting supported by Antiguan government
Just wondering if anyone else is concerned that the Antiguan government supports Japanese whale hunting? Essentially Japan hunts hundreds of whales in our waters every year... including endangered species... and the Antiguan Government is 100% supportive of this massacre.
Tourists to the Caribbean come here for many different reasons, but many flock here to view these beautiful creatures which generates revenue for the area... are we not concerned that they are being slaughtered?

Re: Whale hunting supported by Antiguan government
JC, the government has taken bribes from Japan in the form of useless fish processing plants and purpose built marinas. No proper study has been done to see what Antigua can sustainably catch in its fishery with enough quantity to support a fisheries plant and as a result there is no real industry despite these plants being set up. A study should have been done to show that commercial fishing isn't where we should be investing money and or capital. There have been Antiguan's who invested money and time into long line fishing as well as many other internationally recognized commercial fishing practices, but almost all have failed after a while. The most destructive forms of fishing for our reefs apart from dynamiting them are gill net fishing and uncontrolled fish trapping. These are the most common forms of fishing in Antigua and there is no doubt that with the current Japanese/Antigua models of fishery management our island will have its shallow waters sucked dry in no time. It's almost there already.
That's a whole other topic, but the thing that relates here is that Japan is not helping us by bribing the government with fisheries plants but rather hurting us.
Another thing i should mention is that Antigua and Barbuda's government supports Japanese whaling but for now that is whaling very far from our waters. That being said, among the whales they want to kill and have been killing are humpbacks. We get those lovely creatures here as seen in the pics in this link: http://antiguaisland.blogspot.com/2008_05_20_archive.html
Personally i think if we are going helping Japan go and slaughter whales while getting us into heaps of trouble internationally for supporting this barbaric crap then we should be getting something more useful than some silly fisheries plants which are not ever going to be used properly. Tell the japs to give us money for our hospital or even better let them fund that bridge to Barbuda.
